To everyone out there who regularly checks up on me, thanks for all of your support.
If your wondering where I am, I haven't forgotten about you or my photography, but
I have gone back to school, which keeps me very busy.

If your interested, my major of choice is Web Development, which I felt fit in nicely with
photography. One of the programs we use extensively is Adobe Photoshop CS4.
By the time I get done I should be pretty close to being able to call myself an expert with it.

I've also set up a web site for myself that contains my school projects, so feel

5/26/09 - Female Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Windy, rainy, and cold today, but it didn't stop the birds from visiting. I was blessed with quite a selection today. Hummingbirds, Orioles, Indigo Buntings, Cedar Waxwings, Goldfinches, Woodpeckers, Eastern Kingbirds, the usual selection of Sparrows, and even a Cardinal showed up.
I was glad I decided to wait until tomorrow to go into town.

I did have to shoot at a high ISO which resulted in some noise, but still I'm fairly happy with some of the shots I got today.

6/22/09 - Feather

Found this in the yard, gave it to my cats, cats ignored it. Decided to turn it into my daily. Calm winds, so I layed on the dock, hanging over the edge, dropped the feather in the water and started shooting. There were no boats around when I started but apparently I turned into a magnet or something, because suddenly 4 boats came by. And here I am laying half on half off the dock, dropping a feather into the water, shooting a couple shots with my camera, picking up the feather and re-dropping it, and doing the same thing all over again. I swear the last boat actually took a wide berth around me.

7/30/09 - Poderosa Pine Cone

Shot on a mirror with a black BG behind. Room light overhead. converted to b&w with quite a bit of contrast, then added a blue tint.

anyone have any ideas as to the year and model?

After reading dakotacowboy's comment I did a google search for 1946 fleetmaster. The pictures were slightly different from this one. So I searched a couple years in either direction.
This car looks to be a 1948 Fleetmaster. Only 2 years off Duane. Not bad

8/17/09 - Alarm Clock

Your basic classic wind up alarm clock. This thing ticks quite loudly but is actually quite soothing to fall asleep to. The bell on top however, is very, very loud and is very exhilarating to wake up to.

3/3/09 - Bottoms Up

I found these Trumpeter Swans near Detroit Lakes, MN in Dunton Locks County Park.
Trouble is , they were a little shy. ( or else they were trying to tell me where to put my camera )

Seriously, I took over 100 pictures of these guys and I haven't had a chance to go through them yet.
Check my galleries tomorrow. There was also a couple of very cooperative Canada Geese that I got some good shots of.

7/8/09 - The original radar detector

Truckers used to ( and still do ) use the CB Radio to tell each other where they've seen 'Smokey' I don't use it for that reason myself. I take my time, because I find the journey can be most of the fun. When I get there doesn't matter half as much as how I get there. I take my time and I allow myself plenty of time too. It's amazing what you can find when you get off the main highway and start looking and paying attention to the world around you

If you use the map this button and zoom in as far as you can
you'll see how well this shows up on the satellite photo.
It will give you some idea just how big this is.

5/11/09 - Miniature Red Rose

Same Red Rose a before but this time I used a 31 mm extension tube.
I've seen so many beautifull photos using extension tubes that I just had to join
in on the fun. I ordered a set of pro optics ( they were within my price range - cheap ).
They just came today and I had to fool around with them. They are quite light and they
seem to be well made and I have no issues as far as the mounts are concerned.
The only thing I've noticed so far is the auto focus does not work with my efs 18 - 55 lens.
But I knew that going in as some of the reviews mentioned it. The auto exposure works fine.
So far I'm liking them.

6/2/09 - Epitheca Costalis ( Common Baskettail )

I've been waiting for this day all spring, especially since I bought a set of extension tubes. Today was the day of the first major Dragonfly hatch. Thousands upon thousands of dragonflies hatch all on the same day. The weather was kind of cool today so they sat still for people like me to take their pictures. Since misquitoes make up a major portion of their diet, the hatch always seems to occur at the same time as the first misquitoes start hatching.

Look at this in the largest size to see the details and how hairy these guys are.

5/13/09 - Northern ( Baltimore ) Oriole

This is directly out of enature.com

Recently the Baltimore Oriole was combined with the western Bullock's Oriole as a single species, the Northern Oriole. When trees were planted on the Great Plains, the two forms extended their ranges and met. Despite the differences in their appearance, it was found that they interbred, and that most birds in the central plains were hybrids, so the birds were combined into a single species. Now, it seems that in some places the birds are choosing mates of their own type, and they are considered separate species again.

5/1/09 - Popular Fishing Hole

5/5/09 - Pine Siskin

I'm pretty sure this is a Pine Siskin. I hope someone will correct me if I am wrong.
That hanging birdbath is home made by me, It uses a clay flower pot base resting
inside a steel ring that I bent into a circle and welded together. Then I welded 3 'ears'
equidistant around the perimiter to attach the chains to. The chains meet about 18 inches
up and then become one chain that is a couple of feet long that simply loops over
a branch to hang it. It looks pretty good and I know it's unique. Plus the birds seem to like it.

6/29/09 - Red-bellied Woodpeckers - Father and Child

Not a very clear shot at all, but too cute not to share.
Thanks all for your comments on my rose. Truthfully, I didn't really like the shot.
Apparently, I really am my own worst critic.

3/18/09 - Half Moon

Is it half full or half empty ?

300 mm isn't quite enough. I had to crop this alot to even get this.
but still, I don't think it turned out too bad.

5/30/09 - Flying Insect

Found this guy on my window. Taking a shot of his belly involved shooting from the inside toward the outside. Still bright outside but the belly was dark. Started thinking about how to get more light on his belly. I was too close for my flash so I hit on the bright idea of using a flashlight. Used my tripod as a mono pod and held the flashlight with my left hand. If the neighbors had seen me they would have thought I was nuts ( or signaling SOS ).

Not as clear as I would have liked, But for a first attempt at a macro of an insect I'm happy.

I'm getting tired of winter. I think this guy is too.

Fox Squirrel

I've got a Whiskey barrel planter just outside my door. In the winter I put birdseed out in it. It makes for a nice place to watch the birds and do some photography. I can set up inside and only be a couple of feet away. If I don't make any sudden movements, I generally don't spook the birds.

This was where I took the pictures of the Blue Jay and the Redpoll.

Today, this guy was out there. If you view at 3x you can see the Sun and the outline of my house in his eye

5/12/09 - Watch

I managed to get some work done this morning and then this afternoon a trojan found its way into my computer. Took me all afternoon before I was able to eradicate the little devil. By then I had to get myself cleaned up and head over to church for a church council meeting. That didn't get over until 9:00 and I still didn't have my POD. I didn't have a clue what I was going to shoot, but I knew it was going to involve an extension tube again.

Decided to shoot my watch. Shot on my kitchen table using my leather vest as a BG ( you can just see a slice of it in the upper right ), Single overhead ceiling fixture to the upper right as a light source, and a 31 mm extention tube with a 18 - 55 mm zoom at 42 mm.

The exposure time of 15 sec shows as movement on the minute hand.

4/11/09 - Old Timer

This front end from an old Dodge Truck has retired.
It can now be seen watching the traffic go by from the corner of a farmstead

3/10/09 - Yellow Flower Bouquet

I tried a technique I just read about. I used my flat bed scanner to scan the actual objects rather than use my camera. These flowers ( fake flowers, I didn't have any real ones ) I suspended just above my scanner and scanned them in at 300 dpi. I scanned three individual flowers, one at a time.
Heres a picture of how I used my tri-pod to help me suspend the flower over the scanner

Then using layers in photoshop, I made additional copies and arranged them into a bouquet.

The background I created by misting the glass platen with water and scanning at 300 dpi.

I think the result is pretty cool and I can't wait to try it with some real flowers.

3/13/09 - Fleeing Doe

Wow, I was blown away by the overwelming response to my wooded steam yesterday. I must admit I was excited by the shot and couldn't wait to get it posted. But still..... Thank you everyone.

I didn't come across any eye catching scenes today, but this doe did cross my path.
I caught a quick shot of her through my windshield as she ran across the road.
She was then nice enough to pause and wait for me pull up and get my passenger
window down before she took off again.
I did manage to get a good shot of her 'flag'

This is a photo I restored of my Father taken during his service in WW II. I am fairly sure it was taken some where in the Philippines. Sadly, I never talked to my father about the time he was in the service and he never talked to us about it either, I know almost nothing about that time of his life, and now He, and his brithers, are gone, There is now no one I can talk to about him. I am forced to try and piece together bits and pieces from his old photo albums.
